Hi, I’m Lisa Potato and this is my first post here on our new blog! I figured we should get down to what you came here for – knitting. I made this hat for my friend Will‘s birthday. He is a fan of the robots and so am I.
I should let you know that I based the pattern loosely on these mittens.
This is a very subtle pattern. The hat will look plain until you look at it in good light, close up. If you want your hat to scream “ROBOT!”, use a different color yarn for the purl stitches.
I used Berroco Comfort in Liquorice 9734 throughout. You can use any worsted weight yarn you want. I used approximately 1/4 of the 210 yard skein.
You’ll also need: 16″ US 10 circular needles, a tapestry needle, and stitch markers
Gauge is 16 stitches & 20 rows in 4″ in st st
Let’s start!
Cast on 65 stitches. Place a marker at the beginning of the round and join in the round. Knit 10 rounds.
Now let’s start the robot pattern:
R1-2: K28, P4, K1, P4, K28
R3-8: K30, P2, K1, P2, K30
R9-10: K28, P9, K28
R11-12: K24, P1, K1, P1, K1, P9, K28
R13-16: K25, P2, K1, P9, K28
R17-18: K25, P15, K25
R19: K28, P9, K1, P2, K25
R20: K31, P3, K4, P2, K25
R21: K29, P7, K2, P2, K25
R22: K28, P2, K2, P1, K2, P2, K1, P1, K1, P1, K24
R23: K28, P2, K1, P2, K1, P3, K1, P1, K1, P1, K24
R24: K29, P7, K29
R25-26: K32, P1, K32
If you prefer a chart, here you go! Yellow=knits, red=purls
Robot should be done!
Knit 5 more rounds.
Now you’re going to start your decreases. Knit one round, placing a marker every 13 stitches. On the next round, knit until 2 stitches before the marker and then k2tog. Slip the marker to your right needle and continue decreasing in this way. Use the magic loop method when the hat gets real small. Decrease until just one stitch remains on the needles.
Finishing: Using a tapestry needle, pull the yarn through the last stitch into the inside of the hat and weave in. Weave in tail as well.
Now you have a ROBOT HAT!
